CHAPTER SIXTEEN

I lounged on my bed, swaddled in flannel PJs and cocooned in a thick afghan to stave off the relentless chill of an old building with a craptastic heating system. You'd think a prestigious institution like Chicago College would boast modern residence halls. Alas, the Dracula's Castle-meets-Prohibition-era aesthetic demanded subpar plumbing and heating to enhance the ambiance.

The waning afternoon light streaming through my window overlooking the park warmed my face. I should've been basking in coziness, snuggled up in my blanket fortress, but I wasn't.

The problem? Not the drafts plaguing my bedroom. The bigger issue was tracking down Andy Greene. I'd spent several days casually dropping by his room on the third floor, attempting to catch him in residence. I had trailed him around campus twice, trying to corner him for a conversation. He evaded me each time, and I ended up late for class.

Who knew catching up with a guy living a mere seven floors below in the same residence hall would be so challenging? He was proving as elusive as a leprechaun.

An even bigger problem? Anthony Russo, the opera student prodigy, was one of two recent magical accident survivors on campus. He was fortunate to be alive. Who knew how many unaffected students would remain on campus by Christmas break if calamities persisted?

Things were getting bizarre, and everyone from students to faculty to the administration was losing their shit.

My mind whirled as I penned my thoughts in my journal, an activity I didn't engage in daily but found incredibly useful when facing a colossal problem. I hoped documenting everything I knew about Mason Perry's accident and this new occurrence would help me make sense of the situation.

I scribbled the names of all the people I'd spoken to, questions that lingered, and rambling stream-of-consciousness theories that niggled at my brain.

I stared at the last thing I wrote. “Will Anthony talk to me since he isn't talking to Jazmin and Gunnar?”

I suspected I'd need all the assistance I could muster. Danny promised to accompany me, but I felt I needed more supernatural backup. Flick and I got along well, but I hadn’t asked her to do anything yet. I sighed, tapped my pen against the creamy ivory paper, and listed the qualities of each member of my Witch Punk band. Who would be the best fit to embark on a Veronica Mars quest with me?

I jotted down their skills and personalities, starting with Beckham Singh. Aside from her shapeshifting abilities, superfluous unless we needed to infiltrate somewhere, she exuded confidence and was assertive without being overbearing. She never hesitated to voice her opinions but was also an excellent listener, consistently offering a voice of reason when emotions escalated.

Kai O'Cleary, the ever-optimistic fae with empathic abilities, could always see the silver lining, no matter the situation. Her unique skill set allowed her to connect with anyone human or supernatural on an emotional level, making her exceptional at understanding victims. Plus, there was her mind-reading ability that could give us an edge.
